Spreading Rumours And Lies: A Rant!

What I see when people spread rumours!
As a barmaid, it seems my life is open for discussion and judgement by every customer who walks through the door. Apparently, working in this industry means my life is fair game, and the bits they don't know (which is most bits) they just make up and spread around.
This should annoy me, but as I started writing the post, I realised it doesn't! I find it hilarious - some of the weird and wonderful things that get back to me are beyond belief, and no one with half a brain would believe it.
It also kind of amuses me that the customers have nothing better to talk about than me and my imaginary life - any publicity is good publicity right?! It reminds me of the Shakespeare quote I vaguely remember about how we are all actors on a stage - he forgot to mention that the audience like to get themselves involved!
I'm pretty thick skinned and I just laugh about it - I don't bother even denying the rubbish anymore - people will believe what they want to believe, and that's fine. I have better things to do than debate my own life with someone - you know like go out and have a threesome or two if you believe the rumours ;) (the boring truth is more like sit online and write a blog post or two!).
Where it does annoy me though is when they talk about the other barmaids who take it personally and get upset. The regular customers know who will be upset by their rumours and yet it doesn't stop them spreading them!
Who the hell do they think they are to make crap up about people to the point they don't want to come into work and face another day of comments and looks!
Perhaps the people making rumours up should go out and get themselves a life instead of putting their noses into other people's!

Have you ever had rumours about yourself get back to you? Does it bother you? Let me know in the comments :)

  1. Students like to make suppositions about my life. I think that happens anywhere. But when such things become hurtful, that's a problem.

    1. Yes, I don't think for a second there's only barmaids find this, I'm sure it happens anywhere there are people! I agree - especially when they have been told time and again that their comments aren't funny and are upsetting people!

  2. There are always people in your life who like to spread gossip, I take it as a compliment that my life is obviously more interesting than theirs ;)
I used to work in a bar and I remember the rumours and gossip all too well!

  3. I hear you! Oh, they're everywhere. You could be doing good or not doing at all and there will be nasty rumors about you still. These are from people who are bored, empty, lonely, miserable.

Just ignore them and carry on with your happy fulfilling life.

    Enjoy the weekend.

    1. I've gotten to the point where I do just ignore them, or laugh a little at the more far fetched ones! Thanks you too :)

  4. 'People' can be awful at time, not stopping to think about what they say. Sadly, I very much doubt that human kind will change (or not anytime soon) as it's no doubt something which has carried on for hundreds of years. It is hurtful and as difficult as it is, 'turn the other cheek' and 'rise above it.'

    1. You're probably right there - I can't see it changing any time soon. Honestly, when it's about me I just roll my eyes, laugh and move on, but when they are upsetting other people, I struggle to bite my tongue!

  5. I don't get people who spread rumours. They must be a) very insecure and b) very bored and without a life of their own. It takes a certain kind of venomous person to spread rumours...haters will be haters...#effitfriday

    1. Exactly - if I found myself with nothing better to do than invent things about people, I would definitely be questioning some life choices!

  6. I'm so surprised this stuff even goes on all the time - how can people make up such rubbish that isn't even true when it is so hurtful to others? good rant hun!! xx #effitfrriday

  7. this stuff happens all of the time in any job and you are right to be thick skinned. Eventually people get bored of the stories and move on to a more interesting topic. Unfortunately, I think if you show that you are upset or unnerved by the stories then people don't let it drop so easily and as quickly. Life's tough! You need to have a chat with your fellow barmaids to help them to be a bit thick skinned. I reckon you should start creating some stories about some of your clients in the bar and see how they feel.

    1. The way I see it is these people aren't my friends or anyone who's opinion worries me (obviously there are some nice people who I do class as friends but they aren't the ones bitching). I do try and help the others see that but recently it got out of hand. I haven't gone into detail because it's really personal and not about me so I think it's unfair to share the details. I'm definitely liking that suggestion though :)

  9. I think this happens everywhere. Behind a bar, at a magazine, at a mother's group :) You're good to shake it off (as Taylor Swift says).
On a completely unrelated topic, I did a piece once about unofficial
counsellors like barmaids, taxi drivers, hairdressers, etc. Have you found in your job that people like to tell you all their problems / seek your advice? :)

    1. I agree - anywhere there's people, there's bitchiness!
Oh yes, I have heard so much TMI about so many people's lives - and they wait expectantly for the magic cure!

  10. I think you're right there is bitichyness everywhere and rumour spreading. I think it happens when you have a lot of people in one place. There are some places where it is more pronounced, like when there are a drink or 5 in people......thanks for linking to #effitfriday

    1. I agree - I've found even some of the nicer people seem to get involved in the gossip and rumours once they've had a few drinks! You're welcome and thanks for hosting :)
